Our design approach
Empowered Liveability: Design That Builds Independence
How assistive technology, personalised design and adaptable homes give SDA residents control, comfort and autonomy.
Our approach
True independence begins when the environment adapts to the person
Empowered liveability is how we design for independence. In the words behind Apollo Apartments: “Nothing here is accidental. Everything is designed to support, empower and uplift.” Barrier-free living means independence, with space to breathe, move and live freely, and every home is built for control, comfort and autonomy.
Our homes are participant-led. We don’t use generic blueprints, and the interior design, including all spaces, fixtures, fittings and finishes, is shaped and selected by you, to support your daily living without compromising on style.
Empowerment through control
Assistive technology: one system, many controls
At Apollo Apartments, assistive technology is integrated into a single ecosystem: one system, many controls, zero complexity. It reduces cognitive load so residents can interact with their home effortlessly.
Smart environmental control
Lighting, fans and air-conditioning are fully integrated and operable via smart devices and voice control.
Adaptive kitchen design
Automated benchtops adjust to individual mobility needs, supporting safe and independent use.
Automated access and daylight
Voice and facial recognition command speakers, doors, windows and blinds, removing physical barriers and putting control with the resident.
Circadian lighting and sound
Lighting adjusts intensity and colour through the day to support natural rhythms, rest and emotional regulation, combined with an integrated sound and mood system.
Homes, not units
Design principles behind empowered liveability
Personalisation is dignity
No two participants are the same, so no two dwellings are either. Each Apollo apartment has its own feature tile, cabinetry colours, splashback and material palette.
Premium, not institutional
Bright, warm spaces, custom timber and hand-finished mouldings make a home that feels personal, with layered night lighting for safe, calm movement.
Designed to evolve
Adaptability is one of our guiding principles: homes are designed to evolve with the participants who live in them.
Every one of these principles is built into Apollo Apartments, one of our SDA projects.
The NDIA design category
Improved liveability SDA
Improved liveability is also one of the four SDA design categories the NDIA funds for new participants. It describes housing with better physical access and more features for people with sensory, intellectual or cognitive impairments, for example walls and floors that are very easy to see, living areas where support workers can see you easily, or very few stairs.
Your NDIS plan sets the design category of your home. Compare it with the other categories and building types of SDA housing.
You inspire. We empower.
